Four primary school students who received the Kawasaki Junior Cultural Prize and were appointed as Kawasaki International Friendship Youth Ambassadors by the Mayor of Kawasaki, visited Wollongong on 21 August. The students’ works were judged and chosen from 4,091 drawings and essays.
In this exchange event, students studying Japanese at schools in Wollongong welcomed the Japanese students by giving speeches in Japanese. Following that they sang “Waltzing Matilda” together both in English and Japanese. The Mayor of Wollongong received from each Youth Ambassador the work they made. In return, he gave them gifts of appreciation.
This exchange event is held every year. This year, it is the 22nd event, and so far 80 children have visited Wollongong and presented their awarded works. We have realised that it is not only supported by Sister City Exchange programs, but also by the support of many people and local businesses of Kawasaki and Wollongong.
18 May this year marked the 25th anniversary of establishment of the Sister City relationship between Kawasaki and Wollongong.
We hope these four Youth Ambassadors have experienced and learned a lot through this exchange event, and will support such grass-root exchanges in the future.
