However, fewer are likely to have heard of\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Koshogatsu<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which is celebrated\u00a0at the end of\u00a0the\u00a0new year<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0In Akita Prefecture, various traditional\u00a0Koshogatsu\u00a0events are held every February. In this article, I would like to introduce some of Akita\u2019s unique winter traditions.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Note: February is summer in Australia and New Zealand, but it is winter in Japan as it is in the Northern Hemisphere.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What is\u00a0Shogatsu?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In Japan, the period beginning on 1 January is called\u00a0Shogatsu, a time when families and relatives gather in their hometowns to celebrate the New Year and\u00a0reconnect with one another. In that calendar, the first full moon of the year, which occurred after\u00a0Shogatsu\u00a0(late January to mid\u2011February in today\u2019s calendar), was called\u00a0Koshogatsu. Various\u00a0Koshogatsu\u00a0events were held to mark the conclusion of the New Year celebrations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These\u00a0Koshogatsu\u00a0events carry multiple meanings, including bidding farewell to the deities welcomed during\u00a0Shogatsu, praying for a good harvest before spring farming begins, wishing for health and safety, and strengthening community ties by\u00a0participating\u00a0together.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After Japan adopted the Gregorian calendar, many regions began holding\u00a0Koshogatsu\u00a0events around 15 January. Each balloon carries wishes for health, family safety, and a bountiful harvest. A massive rope, about 80 cm in diameter, 200 meters long, and weighing\u00a0roughly 20\u00a0tonnes, is pulled by thousands of participants divided into two teams: the Upper Town and Lower Town. With a history of over 500 years, the event is rooted\u00a0in a\u00a0tradition\u00a0that predicts the year\u2019s fortunes: if the Upper Town wins, rice prices will rise, and if the Lower Town wins, the harvest will be abundant. With a history of about 450 years, dome\u2011shaped snow huts called\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">kamakura<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0are built, and inside,\u00a0water\u00a0deities are enshrined to pray for family safety, business prosperity, and a\u00a0bountiful\u00a0harvest. Local\u00a0children\u00a0welcome visitors\u00a0inside the huts with\u00a0a\u00a0sweet rice\u00a0drink\u00a0(amazake) and rice cakes\u00a0(mochi). Originating from a Shinto ritual said to date back over 900 years, the sight of\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Namahage<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0demons charging down the snowy mountain with torches is both thrilling and powerful. The\u00a0Oga\u2019s\u00a0Namahage\u00a0tradition involves young men dressing as deity\u2011like ogres on New Year\u2019s Eve, visiting homes to ward off misfortune and admonish laziness.
