\"\"Saitama City, located in the south of Saitama Prefecture, is a vibrant and growing city with a population of over 1.3 million residents. Easily accessible from Tokyo, it is popular both as a residential area and as a base for a variety of industries. Saitama City is one of Japan’s leading bonsai-producing areas, and the Omiya Bonsai Village is a world-famous centre for bonsai. The village also features the Omiya Bonsai Art Museum, the world’s first public bonsai art museum, which serves as a home for promoting bonsai culture. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Since 1984, Saitama City has had a sister-city relationship with Hamilton City, New Zealand. This relationship was established when members of the Junior Chamber of Commerce of Urawa City (now Saitama City\u2019s Urawa Ward) visited Hamilton as part of an educational and cultural tour. Then mayor of Hamilton, Sir Ross Malcolm Jansen, made a formal request expressing his desire to establish a sister-city relationship. Together with the New Zealand Ambassador to Japan, Sir Jansen made a follow-up visit to Urawa City to discuss the formal establishment of the relationship.<\/p>\n

In October 2024, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the sister-city relationship, the current mayor of Saitama City, Hayato Shimizu, paid a visit to Hamilton both to reaffirm the partnership and to tour local public and private facilities.\"\"The visit was attended by many stakeholders, including Hamilton Mayor Paula Southgate, Hamilton City councillors and administrators, Consul General Matsui and Vice Consul Kawashima of the Consulate-General of Japan in Auckland, and others. The meetings between the two cities covered a variety of topics, including sustainable development efforts, sports, and healthcare. The visit reaffirmed that the ties between the two cities have become stronger and more prosperous since the sister-city relationship was established in 1984.\"\"\"\"
\nWhile in New Zealand, the Saitama delegation visited Matamata Intermediate School, located about an hour east of Hamilton. Matamata Intermediate School accepts many junior high school students from Saitama City each year in August. During their exchange, Saitama students stay with local families and enjoy many opportunities to interact with their Kiwi school peers. Saitama City plans to continue these student exchanges as well as develop new initiatives that contribute to the friendship and development between our two cities.\"\"\"\"
\nFinally, the direct interaction between various cultures facilitated by sister-city exchanges plays an essential role in fostering international awareness, as well as the mutual respect and understanding essential for the creation of a multicultural society here in Saitama City.
