Sydney Marathon has been held annually since 2001, the year following Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. This year, it took place on 31 August, and I joined the crowds along the course to cheer on the runners. In perfect weather under a clear blue sky, the sight of ethnically diverse group of participants racing through the streets of Sydney was a vivid reflection of Australia\u2019s multicultural identity. I felt the unifying power of sports through the enthusiastic applause and cheers from spectators lining the route.<\/p>\n

In Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, where I lived for the past three years until last March, Kanazawa Marathon is held every year on the last Sunday of October. Runners can enjoy the city\u2019s unique scenery, including historical landmarks such as Kenrokuen Garden\u2014one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan\u2014 Kanazawa Castle, and Higashi Chaya District. The food stations along the course offer a taste of Ishikawa\u2019s rich culinary culture, including traditional Japanese sweets, and \u201cBeaver\u201d, the locally beloved rice cracker snack. It\u2019s the race that allows participants to experience the charm and character of Kanazawa with all five senses.<\/p>\n

Some runners aim for personal bests, while others dress up as popular anime characters to entertain spectators along the way. Warm encouragement from the sidelines helps push runners toward the finish line.<\/p>\n

Kanazawa Marathon began in 2015 and has been held annually, except for 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now a major event in the city, its continued success is made possible by the many dedicated volunteers who help run the race each year. Staff from two local governments – Ishikawa Prefectural Government and Kanazawa City Hall \u2013 also participate as volunteers, assisting with runner guidance and traffic control in restricted areas.<\/p>\n

In Japan, marathon events are held in all 47 prefectures, which are comparable to states in Australia. If you enjoy running, why don\u2019t you consider joining a local marathon when you visit Japan? Running offers a chance to connect deeply with the region, its people, and even yourself.<\/p>\n
