Link between Major Metropolitan Cities
has mutual benefits
The relationship between Osaka and Melbourne, which was promulgated
in April 1978, has flourished to encompass a wide range of economic,
education and citizenry exchanges. |

the tastebuds of Melbournians. |
Building on the outcomes of the first Roundtable held in Osaka in
1995, a return Roundtable was convened in Melbourne from April 19 -
22 1998, focussing on three main themes that were identified as being
important to both cities, namely City Management, Arts and Culture
and Business and Investment. The City of Melbourne welcomed 160 delegates
from Osaka for the Roundtable discussions.
As both Osaka and Melbourne are bidding for two major sporting events,
Melbourne the 2006 Commonwealth Games and Osaka the 2008 Olympic Games,
the City Management delegation was involved in several presentations
and site visits that focussed on strategies and facilities for hosting
major international events. Outcomes of Roundtable discussions included
a commitment by both cities to the exchange of information and initiatives
that will establish Melbourne and Osaka as internationally recognised
major events cities.
Melburnians were also given the chance to join in the 20th anniversary
celebrations and more than 50,000 attended the three-day 'Bite of Osaka'
food and cultural festival.
The next year saw the 4th Melbourne Osaka Double Handed Yacht Race,
with another food and cultural festival held in the week before the
race, giving the people of Melbourne a chance to meet the sailors participating
in the event. Both cities have made a commitment to a practical program
of exchange over the next five years in the lead up to the 25th anniversary
celebrations in 2003.
