The content of the programme in Tokyo and in our host city, Kobe was relevant to many aspects of my work: local government, natural disaster management, planning and land transport all being areas of responsibility for the Australian Government Department of Transport and Regional Services. In particular, the Kobe City briefings and visits provided an unparalleled perspective on the physical, environmental and social impacts of natural disasters – an overview that would be difficult to obtain anywhere else.
The 2004 Oceania Delegation was a very spirited, warm and cohesive group - 10 strong minded individuals who shared stories, experiences and knowledge with great generosity and without ego. We learnt much from each other and have formed an excellent network for cooperation and knowledge sharing in Australia and New Zealand.
The Oceania Delegation was provided with a cultural and learning experience that will remain in our minds and our hearts for many years. Walking in the rain in the tiny streets of Arima Hot Springs dressed in yukata and geta, and our stay at Arima Onsen Ryokan are experiences we will never forget.
Congratulations to CLAIR on the very high standard of planning and organisation for the Exchange Programme and the Seminar. I look forward to a long association with CLAIR in the future and will be an enthusiastic ambassador for its works and aspirations.
